Peachy Keen!
Last night was the annual Peach Social in Garrettsville Ohio. It's a classic car show with a heavy dose of a small town atmosphere. I see more couples and families than the typical car show. People set up lawn chairs and tend to hang out for the entire event rather than just doing a quick walk-through. A couple of great musicians entertained the crowd; peach pies were available (the local peach crop is in and it was a great year by all accounts). Door prizes were presented throughout the event. And plaques were awarded to the owners of cars that won best in various categories. A 50/50 drawing capped off the event. Mayor Rick Patrick was on hand to emcee, along with the return of Jerry Kehoe. Great to see so many people, laughing, visiting and enjoying themselves. We're well past the middle of summer now, and kids will be returning to school soon. You get the sense that people really want to turn out for events like this before summer slips away entirely.
I always underestimate the amount of time required to shoot this event as well as the amount of daylight there is to work with. The low sun angle of an August evening is dazzling and causes the bright paint and chrome to sparkle. The ever lengthening shadows add drama to the photos. But as the setting sun slips beneath the horizon, the light goes totally flat and I'm left totally reliant on flash. I simply didn't make it to all of the cars before sundown. Yet I did capture a pretty good sampling of the cars and people. Thanks to everyone that agreed to pose for me.
